Summary

Nietzsche called The Gay Science "the most personal of all my books。" It was here that he first proclaimed the death of God -- to which a large part of the book is devoted -- and his doctrine of the eternal recurrence。

Walter Kaufmann's commentary, with its many quotations from previously untranslated letters, brings to life Nietzsche as a human being and illuminates his philosophy。 The book contains some of Nietzsche's most sustained discussions of art and morality, knowledge and truth, the intellectual conscience and the origin of logic。

Most of the book was written just before Thus Spoke Zarathustra, the last part five years later, after Beyond Good and Evil。 We encounter Zarathustra in these pages as well as many of Nietzsche's most interesting philosophical ideas and the largest collection of his own poetry that he himself ever published。

Walter Kaufmann's English versions of Nietzsche represent one of the major translation enterprises of our time。 He is the first philosopher to have translated Nietzsche's major works, and never before has a single translator given us so much of Nietzsche。

I appreciate this book as a project--it's unique, bold, memorable and shows a powerful command of language。 However, while the pyrotechnical style of writing is seductive, the book was often a slog to get through given how viscerally disgusting it often felt for me。 I don't think I have the constitution to enjoy the valorization of contempt and cruelty that runs through it, and felt a weary exhaustion the millionth time I heard him deride 'the masses'。 If he wasn't so articulate I would have qui I appreciate this book as a project--it's unique, bold, memorable and shows a powerful command of language。 However, while the pyrotechnical style of writing is seductive, the book was often a slog to get through given how viscerally disgusting it often felt for me。 I don't think I have the constitution to enjoy the valorization of contempt and cruelty that runs through it, and felt a weary exhaustion the millionth time I heard him deride 'the masses'。 If he wasn't so articulate I would have quit the book early on, since 'wake up sheeple' is a clear cue to exit。 The demeaning caricatures of his inexhaustible list of opponents gave me some good laughs, but more often than not I found myself wishing I was reading something more instructive than his snide remarks。 I will say, though, that his delight in malice was an important teaching tool as I felt it allowed me reflect on it rather than push it away as an ugly part of life。 It gives me a greater sense of accepting the whole of life, of seeing all such ugliness as natural phenomena, but again, I hungered for more detail, more careful analysis。At one point the translator points out that a passage is 'more amusing than correct'--how I wish it were both, I thought to myself。 Despite his confidence he seems to be aware of his ignorance, although at the end of the book he tries to twist this fact into an advantage, which I found unconvincing。 He claims that his lack of education on a wide variety of topics is his form of dance, but while his dance is interesting on account of its intensity, it's often quite clumsy。 I'll end this review with my impression of Nietzsche as an antivaxxer: COVID Vaccines - The sickly masses of the Orient have leaked a new plague upon both the Old World and the New—its provenance still a mystery—forcing commoners of all races into their own cramped quarters for months on end。 How dreadful it must be for the simpleminded, hearing their hollow internal rattle without a crowd to drown it out! Further still, science has provided a vaccine for the populus vaccae, which proves yet again the declining vigor of the world's races。 Where are the beasts or prey that still defiantly breathe clean air? That dare to live dangerously in the face of invisible threats? Has fear finally crippled their will into bovine immobility? 。。。more

I always have this experience with reading Nietzsche that his writing contains much gold which I only manage to extract half of the time。Yet gold I come away with。The gay science differs from Nietzsche's other work in two respects。First is the tone, whilst Nietzsche is usually quite life affirming, I don't think there's another work which is quite as jovial as this one。Secondly is the poetry that the work opens and closes with, which is absolutely lovely and very condusive to his style of commun I always have this experience with reading Nietzsche that his writing contains much gold which I only manage to extract half of the time。Yet gold I come away with。The gay science differs from Nietzsche's other work in two respects。First is the tone, whilst Nietzsche is usually quite life affirming, I don't think there's another work which is quite as jovial as this one。Secondly is the poetry that the work opens and closes with, which is absolutely lovely and very condusive to his style of communicating ideas。 。。。more

Despite the occasional sexist passage, or his piss-weak critiques of socialism and his indifference to exploitation and class-stratification, this is probably one of the most enjoyable of Nietzsche's works and it's brimming with fruitful and thought-provoking insights (along with some garbage takes)。 For what it's worth, the truly good, insightful and fascinating passages far outnumber the terrible ones, and the terrible passages don't take away from the overall themes and ideas of the book。This Despite the occasional sexist passage, or his piss-weak critiques of socialism and his indifference to exploitation and class-stratification, this is probably one of the most enjoyable of Nietzsche's works and it's brimming with fruitful and thought-provoking insights (along with some garbage takes)。 For what it's worth, the truly good, insightful and fascinating passages far outnumber the terrible ones, and the terrible passages don't take away from the overall themes and ideas of the book。This is the kind of book that needs to be read slowly and carefully, to be savored like fine wine。 。。。more

For Friedrich Nietzsche, Christianity invented an ideal world, non-existent, away from all contact with the real world。 He defined Christianity as a vulgar philosophy and morality for weak people and slaves that proposes decadent values that do not let people be free。 In this work, he makes clear the death of a horizon, of a computer truth。

One of the essay themes relates to morality: man is preoccupied and attached to a single objective, to serve what contributes to his conservation, that is to say to the instinct to preserve life。 And that there are no useful or harmful men, that each one contributes to this instinct of life: "Is the most harmful man still the most useful, in the perspective of the conservation of the species? ; because it maintains in him, or else, by his action, in others of the impulses without which humanity One of the essay themes relates to morality: man is preoccupied and attached to a single objective, to serve what contributes to his conservation, that is to say to the instinct to preserve life。 And that there are no useful or harmful men, that each one contributes to this instinct of life: "Is the most harmful man still the most useful, in the perspective of the conservation of the species? ; because it maintains in him, or else, by his action, in others of the impulses without which humanity would have long since weakened or would have rotten"。Second Nietzschean principle: As everything is futility since God is dead, we can laugh at everything。 However, the time of Nietzsche was still the time of tragedy, of religious morality。 Only creators, artists, by their imagination, could upset appearances and received ideas about existence。 。。。more
